"Tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China are SIGNED!"
According to a statement from White House spokesman Harrison Fields from X, "Tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China are SIGNED!"
He added in another post that Trump is "imposing a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on imports from China, with a lower 10% tariff on Canadian energy resources. This bold move holds these countries accountable for stopping illegal immigration and the flow of dangerous drugs like fentanyl."
The New York Times reported that the president signed three orders to implement the tariffs. It has been reported that the tariff on Canada will go into effect this upcoming Tuesday, Feb 4.
White House officials said on Saturday that the tariff would not have any specific exemptions from the tariffs. The orders also have a retaliation clause, which will raise the tariffs against China, Canada, or Mexico if they respond with their own tariffs on American goods.
When reporters asked officials about what would need to be done to have the tariffs removed, authorities in the White House said that the most important factor would be the number of Americans dying from fentanyl as well as the amount of fentanyl getting seized at the border.
Tariffs have usually been used in regard to protecting industries of a country, however, Trump has used them, and is in this case using them to pressure the countries to change their policies to end the flow of illegal immigration as well as fentanyl into the US.
