Former President Donald Trump has surged in the polls following news of his indictment on Thursday and now leads Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as the GOP frontrunner for president in 2024 by 26 percentage points.

57 percent of those polled now support Trump in the upcoming Republican primary in a head-to-head contest with DeSantis, who garnered 31 percent support, according to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll.

Yahoo News reports that a previous Yahoo News/YouGov survey from two weeks ago had Trump with 47 percent support and DeSantis with 39 percent. After the news that Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg was charging Trump broke last week, Trump's 8 percent lead has lept to 26 points.

Trump also gained a majority of support with 52 percent in a hypothetical matchup against a broader, 10-person, GOP primary field. 54 percent of Republicans and those who lean Republican also prefer Trump to be the nominee over "someone else" which is up 3 percentage points from the previous poll.

Trump's surge follows a recent new Harvard/Harris poll that had 50 percent of voters saying Trump would beat Desantis if the GOP primary were held today.

Trump had taken the lead from a list of potential GOP candidates in the primary according to recent polls from Morning Consult and Harvard-Harris.

In the Morning Consult poll Trump led the GOP contenders with 48 percent of respondents saying they wanted the former president at the top of the ticket. DeSantis' number two slot garnered 31 percent.

Trump announced his run for president on November 15, 2022.
