"Airport operations are returning to normal."

Operations at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport began returning to normal Thursday after officials cleared a suspicious item that prompted an evacuation earlier in the morning.

“The item was cleared around 10:20 a.m. by the Arlington County Fire Department. Airport operations are returning to normal. Passengers are urged to reconfirm flight times and gate assignments with their airline,” the airport posted.

The package had been discovered in a staff break room at the airport. According to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, the item was found around 9 a.m., prompting airport police to establish a safety perimeter and evacuate passengers from the D Concourse in Terminal 2.

That concourse serves American Airlines flights. Authorities did not immediately say what made the item suspicious.

Police began investigating after the discovery, while emergency personnel responded to secure the area and evaluate the package. Passengers and staff were moved away from the concourse as a precaution while the situation was assessed.
