A federal grand jury has indicted Vance Boelter on charges related to the June killing of a Minnesota Democrat lawmaker and her husband, as well as the injuring of another state lawmaker and his wife. With the indictment, a handwritten letter meant for FBI Director Kash Patel from Boelter has also been released.

Boelter was charged with two counts of stalking Minnesota House of Representatives Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman; two counts of murder through use of a firearm, one for each Hortman who was fatally shot in their home; a firearms offense for the shooting of the Hortmans; and a firearms offense for the shooting of Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman and attempted shooting of their daughter, Hope. Maximum sentences include life in prison and death.

The handwritten letter from Boelter stated, ““Dear Kash Patel, My name is Dr. Vince Lethorn Berthar, Ed.D. I am the shooter at large in Minnesota involved in the June 12 shootings, which happened in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 13 — sometime between approximately 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. I will probably be dead by the time you read this letter. I wanted to share some information with you that you might find interesting.

“I was told by U.S. military people on the lakes during my release. I’ve been on many operations since then in Eastern Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa — all in the line of duty, doing what I believed was right and in the best interest of the United States. Recently, I was approached about a project that Tim Walz wanted done. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Keith were involved. I wasn’t originally aware of the project — but Tim wanted me to kill Amy Klobuchar and Tina Keith to force a planned retirement. Tim wants to be a senator and didn’t trust them to retire as planned,” the letter added.

The letter went into conspiratorial details around his claim that Walz ordered the killings and concluded, “I’m willing to spill all the beans. I just want my family safe. They had nothing to do with this and are totally innocent. This was a one-person op.”

Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson said in a statement, "Vance Boelter planned and carried out a night of terror that shook Minnesota to its core. He carried out targeted political assassinations the likes of which have never been seen in Minnesota. We grieve with the Hortman family and continue to pray for the recovery of the Hoffmans. Today, a grand jury indicted Boelter with the most serious of federal charges for these heinous political assassinations. Let me be clear: Boelter will see justice."

Boelter has been accused of disguising himself as a member of law enforcement and going to the Hoffmans’ home, where he allegedly shot them and attempted to shoot their daughter. The same morning, Boelter is accused of going to the homes of two other Minnesota elected officials, who were not home at the time, before moving on to the Hortman residence, where he fatally shot them. Boelter was arrested after a two-day manhunt.

Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. of FBI Minneapolis said, "Last month, the State of Minnesota experienced fear and panic. Today, Vance Boelter was indicted by a federal grand jury, marking another step forward in our pursuit of justice.

"As alleged in the indictment, Boelter’s actions took the lives of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman, both beloved members of our community. The indictment also alleges that Boelter seriously wounded Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife. This targeted violence was an attack on the rule of law, resulting in a manhunt involving hundreds of law enforcement officers who worked tirelessly until Boelter was apprehended. The FBI remains grateful to our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners for their dedication throughout this investigation. Together, we will ensure that justice is served and that a price is paid for the reign of terror and violence our community endured."
