Corbyn led Britain’s Labour Party from 2015 to 2020, running on a far-left platform before later being expelled from the party and re-elected to Parliament as an independent.
Corbyn, 76, shared the event on X on Friday, writing, “I’m hosting a phone bank with @nycDSA to Get Out The Vote for @ZohranKMamdani today at 6 pm ET. Let’s get Zohran over the finish line for a New York that’s affordable for all!” The event was promoted through the New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and organized on the Action Network platform.
Harmeet Dhillon, a DOJ leadership member and former Republican National Committee attorney, flagged the post on X, calling the British politician’s involvement potentially illegal. “Foreign interference in a US election?" Dhillon wrote. She added in a follow-up post, "I’m sure the John Brennan posse will get right on this with an indignant letter." Per Newsweek, the DOJ is reviewing the matter after Dhillon’s comments sparked widespread discussion online.
Legal analysts note that while Corbyn appears to have acted voluntarily, his participation blurs the line between protected speech and unlawful foreign involvement. Federal law prohibits non-US citizens from contributing money, resources, or services to American political campaigns—but offers little clarity when it comes to symbolic endorsements.
