As of today, Ontarians can get a COVID test at up to 60 Shoppers Drug Mart, Rexall and independent pharmacies across the province.
This initiative was introduced by the Ford government in order to relieve the province’s testing sites, where it's reported that people are waiting up to 8 hours, to be rejected due to overcapacity.
Ontario has also updated its testing guidelines, which now discourage asymptomatic people from getting a site as an assessment centre. Asymptomatic folks are instead being asked to book an appointment at a local pharmacy. Symptomatic people will not be able to get a test at a pharmacy, due to the high risk of infection.
Premier Doug ford dais Wednesday in a press conference, "We rely on our pharmacists for our flu shots, prescriptions, and important health advice for ourselves and our families. It makes sense to engage them as key partners in delivering more COVID-19 testing.
" "With everyone pitching in, we are well on our way to reaching our goal of 50,000 tests a day and stopping the spread of COVID-19."
