A California professor who founded Black Lives Matter Grassroots has declared that it's "slightly racist" to be a fan of world-famous singer Taylor Swift.
Melina Abdullah, a controversial Pan-African Studies professor at California State University Los Angeles, made the claim on X during the Super Bowl on Feb. 11.
"Why do I feel like it’s slightly racist to be a Taylor Swift fan?" said Abdullah, the founder of BLM Grassroots, which is the daughter company of the Black Lives Matter Global Network.

The professor's comment sparked a lively debate as the most decorated award-winning Grammy artist was in the stands supporting her Kansas City Chiefs boyfriend, Travis Kelce.
Some agreed with Abdullah, while others referred to the comment as mentally ill.

After the San Francisco 49ers lost, which was the team that Abdullah had been supporting, she claimed in another post on X that the loss was because of white supremacy.
"Why do I feel like this was some right-wing, white-supremacist conspiracy?!?! Booooooo!!!!" said Abdullah.

"Folks think they’re attacking me by asking why I think everything is racist…I’m not offended. Virtually everything is racist," she wrote in a follow-up post a few days later.

The College Fix was the first to report on this matter.
Abdullah has been in national headlines quite a few times over the past several years, all for controversial incidents.
The California professor has falsely claimed that actor Jussie Smollett's shocking MAGA hate crime hoax was a "setup." She argued during the actor's Chicago December 2021 trial that he was innocent, despite Smollett being found guilty of perpetrating the hoax, per the outlet.
Additionally, Abdullah filed a lawsuit against Black Lives Matter Inc. on claims that the leader of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Shalomyah Bowers, stole over $10 million from the nonprofit and used the organization as a "personal piggy bank." A California judge threw out the suit last July.
Abdullah's biography on her California State University Los Angeles teaching profile states that she is "a womanist scholar-activist – understanding the role that she plays in the academy as intrinsically linked to broader struggles for the liberation of oppressed people."
Abdullah is also identified as co-director of Black Lives Matter Grassroots, the activist branch of the divisive advocacy group, and of the Black Lives Matter chapter in Los Angeles.
