Mora Gerety was struck and killed while attempting to cross Harrison Boulevard near her Boise, Idaho school.
On November 11, Gerety was allegedly killed by Honduran illegal immigrant Elvin Elgardo Ramos-Caballero in a hit-and-run. Ramos-Caballero was issued a driver's license in the sanctuary state of Oregon, which permits non-citizens to obtain one under the 2021 Equal Access to Roads Act. He has been charged with hit-and-run, records show.
“8-year-old Mora Gerety’s precious life was taken by an illegal alien who should have never been in our country, let alone issued a driver's license by the sanctuary state of Oregon,” said Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a press release. “Mora Gerety’s classmates, teachers, friends, and our nation will carry this loss forever. We ask every American to lift this family up in prayer and we ask God to grant them the courage as they face the hardest days a family can endure. Decades of open border policies have turned every community into a border town. These policies have deadly consequences.”
Ramos-Caballero was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on November 11 and has been charged with the killing. According to DHS, the alleged assailant illegally entered the United States in September 2015 and was released into the country under the Obama administration. An immigration judge ordered his removal in May 2016.
Oregon Democratic state Rep. Susan McLain, who co-sponsored the Equal Access to Roads Act, defended the law in a statement to KATU, writing, "I was a co-chief sponsor of HB 2015 to help ensure everyone on the road is demonstrating the necessary training and insurance to drive."
"Regardless of citizenship status, families in Oregon must be able to take their kids to school, visit their doctor, and go to work. All street users are safer when drivers are licensed and insured," said McLain.
Gerety was remembered as an "adorable, shy, and very sweet girl."
