ICE made 956 arrests nationwide on Sunday.
Dr. Phil McGraw posted on X that the first arrest “was a convicted sex offender and internet predator from Thailand.” The accompanying video showed Dr. Phil asking the suspect about his criminal past before the illegal immigrant eventually recognized him from TV and clammed up, asking for a lawyer.
McGraw said in another post that ICE aimed to pick up 270 "high-value targets,” stating, "They're not sweeping neighborhoods like people are trying to imply.”
At an ICE center, McGraw, addressing rumors and accusations stoked by Democrats, asked Homan directly, “Are you going into schools and arresting children at schools?” Homan replied, “No,” to which Dr. Phil countered, “Is anything like that happening?” Homan again replied, “No sir.”
On Friday, Chicago Public Schools claimed that ICE had attempted to raid an elementary school and that teachers kept them from coming in. It was actually Secret Service investigating a threat.
Since his inauguration on Jan. 20, Trump has launched a massive crackdown on illegal immigration, which included sending US troops to the Southern Border and deputizing law enforcement agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the US Marshals Service to conduct immigration enforcement to supplement ICE efforts.
Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove also publicized his trip to watch agents combat illegal immigration. Bove said in a statement, "This morning, I had the privilege of observing brave men and women of the department deploying in lockstep with DHS to address a national emergency arising from four years of failed immigration policy," adding that the FBI and federal prosecutors would also be working on the effort.
An official with the Department of Justice said the first arrest in Chicago that Bove witnessed was an illegal immigrant who had "killed a 19-year-old woman while driving under the influence."
On Sunday, ICE said on X that it had made 956 arrests nationwide, three times the daily average for arrests in fiscal year 2024 under the Biden administration.
