Fed chair admits huge 'influx' of illegal immigration to blame for rising unemployment

"We understand there's been quite an influx across the borders, and that has actually been one of the things that's allowed the unemployment rate to rise."

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell said Monday that the millions of illegal immigrants that have flowed across the Biden-Harris administration’s open southern border has created rising unemployment in America.

House Speaker Mike Johnson posted on X: “The Federal Reserve Chairman admitted the massive influx of illegal immigrants under Biden and Harris has raised the unemployment rate. This administration’s refusal to secure the border is actively harming American workers and our economy.”

In response to a reporter’s question about whether “labor market cooling” will have to be a consequence of “job loss,” Powell responded: “So on the job creation, it depends on the inflows, right? So if you're having millions of people come into the labor force, then you're creating 100,000 jobs.”

“So it really depends on what's the trend underlying the volatility of people coming into the country. We understand there's been quite an influx across the borders, and that has actually been one of the things that's allowed the unemployment rate to rise, and the other thing is just a slower hiring rate, which is something we also watch carefully. So it does depend on what's happening on the supply side,” Powell said.

The Biden-Harris administration continues to fly illegal immigrants from the border to destinations across America. In the Sept. 3 presidential debate between Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, immigration and the border crisis were hot button issues. Harris made promises about how she would handle it "on day one," leading Trump ask why she hasn't taken any action already since she's already in the White House and was appointed to handle border security and the "root causes of migration" by President Joe Biden in March 2021.
