Despite the worsening state of coronavirus, flights from infection epicentres like China, Italy and Iran continue to pile in.

On Tuesday of this week, Air Canada cancelled all flights to Italy. Other Canadian airlines have yet to follow suit. There have been reports that airport security is not screening incoming passengers or telling them to go into self-isolation—even if they may be coming from high-risk countries.

Numerous airlines are still operating direct routes to China. When flying from Vancouver, BC ticket prices have been as low as $590, sparking concerns that  travellers will use coronavirus-affected ticket discounts as an opportunity to trot the globe.

Similarly, routes from Italy to Canada are still fully operational, with Air Italia and Air France offering single-stop flights from Rome.

President Trump announced Wednesday evening that he would ban travel to the US from Europe for the next 30 days, starting next Friday. No similar decision has been made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trump’s ban on travel will be adjusted based on conditions on the ground, and there will be exemptions for Americans who have undergone screenings. These prohibitions will not apply to the UK.
