Former Liberal MP to serve no jail time for stalking, assaulting his ex and her new boyfriend

The former Liberal MP who was accused of two counts of assault and one count of stalking and pleaded guilty on Thursday.

Marwan Tabbara, who represented Kitchener South—Hespeler, attacked his former spouse and her boyfriend inside of their own home. He was given a conditional discharge for the crime.

Crown attorney Ian Bulmer told Global News: "The sentence imposed was a conditional discharge with probation for three years with various additional terms (in addition to the statutory terms), a five-year weapons prohibition order (under section 110 of the Criminal Code) and a DNA databank order."

The male victim's impact statement called the event "surreal, saying that it 'opened [his] eyes on what some humans are capable of.'"

"Like everyone else, I’ve heard disturbing stories about deranged human behaviour but being the victim of one changes my sense of safety forever," he said.

"How can I feel safe after having the feeling of warmth, love and refuge that I felt inside my home abruptly replaced by fearing for my life. The fear of being attacked by surprise again like it happened that unbelievable night haunted me all the time," he said.

According to the National Post, the female victim did not provide an impact statement.

Tabbara will need to complete 120 hours of community service, and will be required to report to police once a month for the next three years.
