The seven senators who went against the party line and voted to impeach Donald Trump are now facing very strong backlash and censure for their actions.

Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska,  Richard Burr of North Carolina, and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania are the seven dissenting Republican Senators who voted against their own party on Saturday afternoon.

Their votes, however, weren't enough to reach the two-thirds majority (67 votes) required by the Constitution in order to impeach the ex-president. Saturday's vote resulted in an acquittal of Trump.

Sens. Burr and Toomey have already announced their retirement according to Fox News. Nonetheless, the Pennsylvania GOP didn't hesitate to criticize Toomey for his role in the impeachment proceedings in a formal statement:

"This post-presidency impeachment proceeding was an unconstitutional theft of time and energy that did absolutely nothing to unify or help the American people.  I share the disappointment of many of our grassroots leaders and volunteers over Senator Toomey's vote today. The vote to acquit was the constitutionally correct outcome," the statement read.

Likewise, the North Carolina GOP had similar words for their Sen. Burr, whose vote to impeach caught many by surprise:

"North Carolina Republicans sent Senator Burr to the United States Senate to uphold the Constitution and his vote today to convict in a trial that he declared unconstitutional is shocking and disappointing," Chairman Michael Whatley said.

Ben Sasse has faced censure and criticism before, and had this to say:

"You are welcome to censure me again, but let’s be clear about why this is happening. It’s because I still believe, as you used to, that politics isn't about the weird worship of one dude."
