Montreal Canadiens head coach Claude Julien has been fired by the club, a statement from the team said on Wednesday.
Dominique Ducharme has been named interim head coach for the time being.
Assistant coach Kirk Muller was also fired.
"I would like to sincerely thank Claude and Kirk for their contributions to our team over the past five years during which we worked together. I have great respect for these two men whom I hold in high regard," general manager Marc Bergevin in a press release.
"In Dominique Ducharme, we see a very promising coach who will bring new life and new energy to our group. We feel that our team can achieve high standards and the time had come for a change. "
The Canadiens started the season strong, but have since gone on a five-of-six game losing streak, including a close loss to the Ottawa Senators last night.
Julien was in his fifth year of his second stint as Canadiens head coach, bolstering a 201-175-10-50 record during his two tenures.
