Health Canada approved use of the first Canadian COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday.
The vaccine, produced by Quebec-based company Medicago, was approved for human use and is the first Canadian vaccine to be approved in over 20 years.
The approval of the Medicago vaccine, which uses the GlaxoSmithKline adjuvant to boost efficacy, is the first plant-based vaccine in the world.
The vaccine has been approved for use for people aged 18 to 64, a statement from Health Canada says.
The Medicago vaccine was 65 percent effective against the Delta variant, and has shown 71 percent efficacy against all variants besides Omicron.
This vaccine uses a new technology that mimics the structure of COVID, but uses no genetic material from it.
The vaccine provides another alternative to those who may be hesitant to mRNA technology. Health Canada also recently approved Novavax, which does not use mRNA either and opts for a more traditional inoculation method.
