In the Standards of Care, the organization references a castration fetish forum to outline a “eunuch” gender identity.
In 2021, WPATH released a draft of its 8th edition of its Standards of Care. The guidelines are widely used to shape transgender healthcare practices and legislative policies.
In the Standards of Care, the organization references a castration fetish forum to outline a “eunuch” gender identity. Reduxx reported that the forum hosted thousands of fictional narratives depicting child sexual abuse, including stories involving the castration of boys.
One of the founding members of the forum, Thomas Pidel, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for being involved in a pedophile ring. Pidel was convicted in 2005 and was classified as a Level 3 sex offender, the highest risk category.
Investigations revealed that Pidel was linked to a Belarus-based child pornography network and participated in several online groups promoting pedophilia and castration fetishism. These groups, including “alt.support.boy-lovers” and “alt.eunuchs.questions,” were used to discuss topics ranging from pedophilia activism to genital modification practices.
"The group alt.eunuchs.questions was created in 1996 in order to promote a sexual interest in voluntary castration. Initially, the group was supported by Canadian Shannon Larratt, creator of the website Body Modification Ezine (BME),” Reduxx reported.
When the Eunuch Archive community was first formed in the late 1990s, Pidel worked with site administrator Larratt to draft an FAQ primer for new members. The primer instructed participants on how to share pornographic sadomasochistic material. Additionally, Pidel said the purpose of the group was to network amateur genital surgeons with those who want to undergo illicit surgical castration.
The WPATH Standards of Care stated in its "Eunuch" section, "The greatest wealth of information about contemporary eunuch-identified people is found within the large online peer-support community that congregates on sites such as the Eunuch Archive (www.eunuch.org), which was established in 1998."
The report comes as WPATH has faced repeated scrutiny in the past few years due to its Standards of Care. The organization previously faced backlash after it decided to remove minimum age recommendations for transgender-identifying minors undergoing irreversible sex-change procedures.
