Loblaws is planning to hire temporary workers to help with its grocery stores and pharmacies as the spread of the novel coronavirus continues according to Global News.
In a statement, the Loblaws and Shoppers Drug Mart head of human resources said that the current workers are looking for “much-needed relief” as the stores continue to stay open.
“Our supply chain is strong, and we’re going to keep it that way,” said Wilson. “We know people are relying on our stores to be open, stocked and ready to serve.”
“In order to keep things running smoothly, we need a full team in stores and distribution centres. We also need to be able to give our current team a break. So we’re inviting people to apply, and we’ll reach out if we need a hand restocking, supporting customers or just pitching in.”
A new website was launched by Loblaws to recruit temporary workers as fast as possible.
Positions that the company is looking for include store clerks, assemblers, Shoppers Drug Mart merchandisers, pharmacists and pharmacy assistants.
“With all that’s going on, we know there are some people out there who are looking for work,” noted Wilson. “We don’t know how much help we’ll need, or where, but if there are people looking to be employed and paid right now, maybe we can help each other out.”
Loblaws made an announcement last week, stating that employee wages will temporarily be raised by approximately 15 percent.
Loblaws CEO Galen Weston called the raise a way to “make sure that a significant portion of that benefit would go straight into the pockets” of Loblaws workers.
Plexiglass shields are also being installed at checkout counters by the company as it looks to acquire more safety equipment for employees.
Loblaws also has specific store hours for seniors and the disabled.
