Middle school librarian defends pro-prostitution book in library, says many students are 'sex workers'

In Loudon County Virginia, a teacher at Sterling Middle School contacted police after a conservation with Stefany Guido, her school's librarian, who said that a pro-prostitution book belonged in the school's library because, she alleged, many of the students in the school are sex workers

The conversation started when the teacher asked Guido if the school had a copy of a book which had recently been flagged by a concerned parent on Twitter called "Seeing Gender." The book has a chapter on sex work, entitled "'Sex work' is not a bad term."

According to the Daily Wire, Guido retrieved the book and defended its contents. The teacher felt that she had a moral obligation to notify the authorities, as she felt that the students in her charge were being placed in danger.

"She started talking about how there’s kids who come to the library who do sex work, and this makes them feel validated," the teacher later mentioned when being interviewed by police.

"As a teacher, if you get an individual student coming to you because [they're] abused, you have to go the police immediately."

The Daily Wire further reports that "Guido did not name specific students, except one who had passed through the school about six years ago."

Recounting her conversation with Guido, the teacher said: "I said, 'This is like a textbook for how to do this, including selling your body for hormone replacement therapy.' She said, 'There’s no pornography in it so it doesn’t matter.'

One passage of the book read: "A person may exchange sex or sexual activity for things they need or want, such as food, housing, hormones, drugs, gifts, or other resources."

Another stated that prostitution is "a job like being a store clerk, an architect, or a freelance writer. We all, unfortunately, have to do work to make a living. Some of us hate our jobs and some of us love them–the same goes for those who do sex work. Sadly, sex work is generally misunderstood."

According to The Daily Wire: "On the recording, Deputy Jamie Holben — a former School Resource Officer for the middle school— notes that the school is in a rough neighborhood where detectives have reason to believe child trafficking has occurred."
