In 2021, the first year of Biden's presidency, there has been a massive surge in encounters with illegal migrants along the southern US border, totaling over two million, according to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency.
In fact, the numbers have jumped to more than double those of the previous year, when Trump was in office. The CPB reported on Monday that the 2021 total clocks in at 2,035,010.
According to ImmigrationReform.com, the 2022 fiscal year began in Oct 2021. Since that time, the CPB has recorded 518,370 encounters with people in the US illegally. That number is also more than double the encounters of the first quarter of fiscal year 2021.
It is widely speculated that changes in immigration policy implemented by the Biden administration have led to increased activity at the border. Specifically, Biden's famous "catch and release" protocols are thought to be a deciding factor in the spike in illegal migration to the US:
Another probable culprit to the US's ballooning problem with illegal migration is the striking down of the Trump-era "remain in Mexico" policy, which required migrants to resolve their refugee or other immigration status while waiting in Mexican territory.
This policy had helped curb immigration, but was nonetheless struck down by Biden upon taking office. Later, a judge ordered the policy be reinstated, but the Biden administration has done so begrudgingly.
