The ReidOut, an MSNBC show hosted by Joy Reid, recently faced its lowest viewership in the show's history, both in total viewership and in a key advertising demographic.
For the week of June 14-18, The ReidOut averaged a total of 1.2 million viewers, the smallest crowd since the show premiered in July 2020.
In another blow, the key advertising demographic of 25-54 averaged only 149,000 viewers, placing the show in 29th amongst cable news programs in that demographic..
The show, according to Fox News, finished behind 15 Fox News, five MSNBC, and eight CNN shows.
Every Fox News program airing weekdays between 6am and 1am brought in a larger viewership in that demographic than ReidOut.
According to Fox News, "Fox News Primetime, which is Reid’s direct time-slot competition, averaged 1.5 million viewers and 238,000 among the key demo to top the MSNBC show by 60 percent."
Reid joins a growing list of big name left news hosts with plummeting viewerships in recent months.
CNN host Brian Stelter's Reliable Sources brought in 656,000 viewers on Father's Day, marking the show's smallest audience size of 2021. The program has fallen short of the 1 million viewer benchmark for 12 straight weeks.
Viewership for Nicolle Wallace's 4 pm MSNBC show Deadline: White House has dropped around 80 percent since January 2021. This drop was seen in the key demographic of ages 25-54.
CNN’s Jake Tapper, host of The Lead with Jake Tapper, has lost 75 percent of his audience since January. The show averaged 2.8 million viewers in January but drew in only 706,000 in the 4pm time slot in June, losing three-quarters of its audience in the process. Tapper’s second-quarter viewership is down 49 percent compared to the first quarter.
Meanwhile, Fox News shows like Unfiltered with Dan Bongino have drawn in staggering numbers of viewers, both in total and in the key demographic.
Last week, the show was the "number one cable news show over the weekend in the demo for the third week in a row," according to a press release, bringing in 1.6 million viewers and 297,000 in the 25-54 demographic.
Reid, who according to Fox News has "a long history of spreading conspiracy theories and misinformation," came under fire recently for stating that those who oppose critical race theory teachings in schools are racist.
In 2018, Reid claimed that homophobic comments left on her old blog The Reid Report, were written by hackers, going as far as requesting the help of the FBI to prove her claim.
She then reportedly admitted it was unlikely she was hacked, but still claimed that she didn’t recall making the offensive remarks, issuing an apologized.
According to Fox News, "Reid’s old blog also touted "America First" immigration policies, featured anti-Semitic comments, encouraged readers to check out "Loose Change," a documentary on a conspiracy theory that alleges the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, were planned by the United States government, and had then-Sen. John McCain’s head photoshopped onto the body of the 2007 Virginia Tech shooter."
Reid’s reputation was seemingly undamaged by the events. She replaced Chris Matthews’ time slot after he reportedly made inappropriate comments to female guests, and subsequently stepped aside.
Reid, alongside Wallace and Rachel Maddow, led the networks 2020 political coverage.
