"I'm going to read you several different passages from a book titled 'Him' by Sarina Bowen that the district made available for students to check out in room Heinz 104, an English classroom," the mother, identified as Marie Pangerl, began in her virtual address to the board of MN's Sartell-St. Stephen Independent School District 748. "I want to know how and why this book was ever allowed in our school, more specifically, that process that was just discussed and how books are approved."
She then began reading a portion of the book out loud, from when the author was graphically describing acts of oral, digital, and anal sex between two young men.
"I sucked him deeper into my mouth, almost to the base. And just when he moaned, I released him, gliding my tongue along the long, hard length of him, until his d*ck was glistening," the disgruntled mother said to the school board.
"I laughed at the moisture leaking out of his tip, and the taste of him infused my tongue, making my head spin. I was blowing my best friend. It was so surreal. It was what I dreamed about for so long, and the fantasy was nothing compared to the reality."
According to the book's overview, protagonist Ryan Wesley "coaxed his very straight friend into a bet that pushed the boundaries of their relationship" when they were 18, causing the two to become estranged for four years. After meeting again in a collegiate athletic tournament, Wesley has questions like, "Can one night of sex ruin a friendship? If not, how about six more weeks of it?"
Pangerl continued reading, "F*ck yeah, Canning's hips began to rock as I took him in my mouth again. I licked the crown of his c*ck, teasing, savoring, then taking him deep again."
The excerpt continued to detail the sexual relations.
"I quicken the pace, squeezing his shaft on every upstroke, tighter than I thought he'd like. But he kept muttering 'Harder, faster, Wes.' A choke sound left his lips; 'F*ck Wess, you're making me come.' His fingers pulled my hair to the point of pain, his abs tightening as his hips rocked faster. A few seconds later, he groaned. "I tease and caress for several long moments before slipping my finger inside. My other hand grips his erection. I'm selfish, but I don't want him to come until I'm very deep inside him," Pangerl continued reading.

The author continued to describe the digital sex in great detail, which escalated to anal intercourse.

Just the tip, but holy hell, the pressure is incredible. He's hot and tight, squeezing me into oblivion. 'Oh f*ck, oh f*ck, oh f*ck.' It's all he seems capable of saying as my cock pedals deeper," the mother read, concluding the excerpt.
"I hope these examples serve as a wake-up call to many other parents and community members in this district," Pangerl said. "And let me be the first to ask you again. Who, how, when and why?"
The video showed a seemingly uncomfortable audience and school board after hearing the shocking book from one of the school district's English classrooms.
Board treasurer Jen Smith spoke up, asking "What are we teaching our children? Like, I'm sorry, now I'm [upset]."
"It's a material for learning and teaching per that process," another board clerk Emily Larson replied, before calling for "intervention."
"Per that process this is material that is for learning and teaching, so if this is material for learning and teaching per this form that has been sent, that is available on the website, that would be something where there would need to be some sort of intervention because that can't be able for learning and teaching in our school. That's not... we don't want to be—"
She was cut off by board director Jason Nies, who said "there's a process for that."
"I have a question," Smith interjected, appearing to address Nies. "If we have a pipe that burst in our cafeteria, is there a process that we have to follow? Or are you going to turn that water off on your own? I would hope, as the chief executive, you would [turn that water off]."
Larson spoke up again, saying "… I mean, what was read was disgusting. I have never felt so uncomfortable my entire life. Never again will I ever want to hear any of that as an adult... it should be as simple as 'go get the book."
Smith again chimed in, sarcastically saying that the board might as well do away with their internet policy if they allow pornographic material in book form.
"And we do have an internet policy, I mean, maybe we should just open the internet for a free-for-all," she said to the rest of the board. "I mean we have the how-to step-by-step, why not have the video go along with it?"
"This just seems like common sense, and I understand following a process," Larson replied. "But, as Jen said, there are things that are simply an emergency... and this seems to be one."
ISD 748 faced immense backlash on Twitter after the meeting recording was published by Libs of TikTok, with several commenters grilling Director Nies for speaking in favor of "the process" instead of taking immediate action to remove the explicit material from classrooms.
"You probably want to check this fella’s hard drive…" wrote one commenter under an unrelated post from the school district, which has yet to release any statement on the matter.
Other comments called the people in charge of the reading material "groomers," and "perverts."
