United States Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle appeared before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, refusing when Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) asked if she wanted to use the lawmaker’s five minutes of allotted time to draft up a resignation letter in the wake of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13.

"My first question: both sides of the aisle today have asked for your resignation. Would you like to use my five minutes to draft your resignation letter," Mace asked, to which Cheatle responded, "No, thank you."

Mace continued with a series of yes or no questions, asking if July 13 was a "colossal failure." Cheatle said "yes."

Cheatle responded "yes" that the events of July 13 were preventable, that the Secret Service has been transparent with the committee, and that the Secret Service isn’t political. Cheatle was also asked whether "leaking your opening statement to Punchbowl News, Politico’s Playbook, and the Washington Post several hours before" sending it to the committee was political, to which Cheatle said she had "no idea" how her statement got out there.

"Well, that’s bullsh*t," Mace responded.

Mace also asked whether Cheatle had given all requested audio and video to the committee. Cheatle said she would have to get back to Mace on that subject, with Mace responding "that's a no. You're full of sh*t today." After calls from another committee member to "maintain decorum," Mace continued, asking whether all memorandums requested had been provided, with Cheatle giving a similar response.

"You are being dishonest or lying. I just - you're being dishonest here with this committee, these are important questions that the American people want questions to, and you're just dodging and talking around it in generalities and we had to subpoena you to be here and you won't even answer the question."

After Cheatle refused to draft a resignation letter, Rep Byron Donalds called for Cheatle to be fired from her post. "In my opinion, you do need to be fired immediately," he said, adding that "you're in charge and that's why you need to go."

In the same hearing, Rep. Mike Turner asked whether the security plan for the Butler rally was "sufficient for the specific and generalized threat to Donald Trump's life from Iran," to which Cheatle said that it was. Cheatle also said in the hearing that "I think that I am the best person to lead the Secret Service at this time."
