As complicated evacuations of remaining American citizens and permanent residents continue in the wake of the US military’s full withdrawal from Afghanistan, the latest departures from the country have resulted in over 30 people evacuated from the Taliban-controlled country.
According to Axios, a chartered Qatar Airways flight departed Afghanistan with 19 US citizens on board, while two other US citizens and 11 permanent residents traveled separately overland.
"Today’s departures demonstrate how we are giving Americans clear and safe options to leave Afghanistan from different locations," said NSC spokeswoman Emily Horne in a statement Friday.
"A number of Americans have taken these options; some have decided not to, for a variety of reasons," Horne added. "That is their right. We understand these are difficult decisions. We will continue to provide proven options for leaving. It is up to Americans who remain whether they choose to take them."
On September 5, the White House stated that around 100 Americans remain in Afghanistan.
On Thursday, around 200 people left Afghanistan on a flight to Qatar, which included several American citizens.
Four US citizens were evacuated from Afghanistan on Monday, marking the first known evacuation of American citizens since the US' withdrawal.
President Joe Biden and the Biden administration has noted several times that evacuation efforts are ongoing, although made more difficult due to the lack of a military presence in Afghanistan.
"For those remaining Americans, there is no deadline. We remain committed to get them out if they want to come out," said Biden in a speech given August 31, the day after US troops officially left Afghanistan. "We will make arrangements to get them out if they so choose."
Secretary of State Antony Blinken noted the difficulty of evacuating Americans from Afghanistan post-US military withdrawal earlier this week.
"While there are limits to what we can do without personnel on the ground, without an airport with normal security procedures in place, we are working to do everything in our power to support those flights, and to get them off the ground," Blinken said in announcement that the Taliban was not letting charter flight depart from the airport at that time.
