New York City's lefty suburbs are shifting to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump because of his strong long and order policies and his persistent criticism of the Biden-Harris administration utter failures to protect Americans from “migrant crime” while they have allowed “millions of illegals” across the southern border. It could be major political realignment in the city, the New York Post reported.
They have long been toss-ups, but Long Island’s Nassau and Suffolk counties went Republican in the midterm elections of 2022, though there are twice as many registered Democrats than Republicans there. That phenomenon could be an indication of how former President Trump is performing in similar jurisdictions across America, just as Richard Nixon attracted the “hard hat” vote in 1968 with his message about the growth of crime and lawlessness.
Trump was victorious in Suffolk County in the 2020 but only beat Joe Biden by fewer than 250 votes. By 2022, both Suffolk and adjacent Nassau County, which straddles the Big Apple, saw huge Republican gains in local and congressional elections. “I think the real catalyst was the crazy way that the Democrats were managing both Washington and Albany,” Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican, told Fox News Digital. “Now, when you talk about cashless bail, when you look at our insecure borders . . . we’re spending billions of dollars on people who have been here for 15 minutes rather than hospitals, infrastructure, schools. People are fed up.”
It’s the suburban voters who are listening to Trump’s message. “I think the Democrats are the ones that are helping us the most, and I think moderate Democrats and independent voters want to vote Republican now because they’re fed up with the policies of Biden-Harris,” Blakeman said.
Laura Curran, the Democrat who lost to Blakeman, is also pro-police and was against New York’s bail reform law that made the courts a revolving door for criminals. She told Fox that no matter how loud she supports the law and order agenda, the defund the police talking points from prominent Democrats in Congress are losing votes in suburban New York.
“Talking about who is the standard-bearer of your party is really, really important,” she said. “That’s why it's good Biden is gone, and Kamala Harris is in,” she said, apparently unaware that Harris has backed police defunding in the past.
At Trump’s rally Wednesday, the former president talked about former Rep. Lee Zeldin, who is from Suffolk County and unsuccessfully ran against Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY), having a position in a new Trump administration and the crowd loudly cheered. Hochul did not win by a wide margin in one of the bluest states in the Union.
New York City voters are worried about crime, illegal immigration, taxes and the sagging economy – all issues that Trump routinely addresses in his rallies, the Post noted.
