Fani Willis speaks out after allegations she hired her lover to prosecute Trump: ‘You cannot expect black women to be perfect’
“They only attacked one. First thing they say, ‘Oh, she’s gonna play the race card now.’ But no God, isn’t it them that’s playing the race card when they only question one.”
Fani Willis, the Fulton County, Georgia district attorney who brought charges against former President Donald Trump on election interference, claims that allegations she had an "improper" relationship with a prosecutor she hired were made because she is black.
Earlier this month, it was revealed in court documents that Willis had hired Nathan Wade, her alleged partner, as special prosecutor in the case against Trump. According to the documents, Wade also spent funds his firm received for working the case on extravagant vacations for the pair.
On Sunday, Willis addressed the accusations at the Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta. She said, "They only attacked one. First thing they say, ‘Oh, she’s gonna play the race card now.’ But no God, isn’t it them that’s playing the race card when they only question one, " according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Willis claimed that John Floyd and Anna Green Cross, who are also prosecutors assigned to the case, were not targeted, because they are white. "Isn’t it them playing the race card when they constantly think I need someone from some other jurisdiction in some other state to tell me how to do a job I’ve been doing almost 30 years.”
This was the first time Willis publicly addressed the allegations against her and Wade. On Sunday, she did not mention Wade by name but referred to him as "a great friend and a great lawyer."
Michael Roman, a former official on Trump’s 2020 campaign and the former president’s co-defendant, accused Willis and Wade of having an "improper" and "clandestine" affair while appointments were being made for the case involving alleged interference in the 2020 election.
Wade has been paid almost $654,000 in legal fees since January 2022, payments authorized by Willis, according to Fulton County.
Last week in court, Roman alleged that the affair compromised the integrity of the case, asking that the charges be dropped and that the entire district attorney's office, including Willis and Wade, be disqualified from prosecuting the case.
Willis indicted Trump in August for allegedly attempting to circumvent the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. The former president pleaded not guilty.
