A registered sex offender has been arrested and charged with another crime after a fatal shooting occurred outside an RTS Transit Center in Rochester, New York.
Law enforcement said that 44-year-old Jamel Robinson followed 38-year-old Kevin Rigdon from the bus station door towards the direction of St. Paul Street around 7:45 am Tuesday, WHAM reports. He is then said to have pulled out a 9mm pistol before firing multiple shots at Rigdun. He then allegedly fired at a different man before fleeing the scene.
Charges Robinson faces after the shooting include second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Rigdon has been pronounced dead, and the other man, who is in his 40s, is currently in critical condition at the hospital.
Robinson knew the victims, but a motive for the shooting is unclear, according to police.
Police say that after getting a description of the suspect following the shooting, they found Robinson strolling toward an exit of the Sibley Tower Building. They reportedly apprehended him with a "minor use of force" before he could pull out and attempt to use the loaded 9mm handgun inside of his pocket.
Robinson is not legally allowed to possess a firearm in New York State, as he has seven misdemeanor convictions in addition to two felony convictions, with a criminal sex act included in the mix. Authorities said he was discharged from lifetime parole in August 2022, and is a registered sex offender.
The alleged shooter is currently being held at the Monroe County Jail.
