Sober Steve-O asked Bill Maher to not smoke weed during podcast appearance—Maher refused

Steve-O, most famously known for his antics in the Jackass film series, is 16 years sober. Maher on the other hand, is often seen smoking marijuana in his podcast Club Random.

"I’m a clean and sober guy. It’s very important that I maintain my sobriety, it’s approaching 16 years," Steve-O said on his podcast, with guest Patrick Bet David. "I am about to be sweet 16."

He later added, "really there’s nothing that I value more than my sobriety. There’s nothing more that I protect than my recovery. I found it kind of upsetting when the Bill Maher podcast reached out and his thing is he smokes pot the whole time while he interviews people. I said 'hey, I’d happily go on there, but while I’m on, out of respect for my sobriety, could he refrain from smoking pot.' He said no and that’s a dealbreaker."

Steve-O noted other podcast appearances in which hosts usually smoke marijuana but opted out of that out of respect for their guest.

"Mike Tyson’s podcast is called ‘Hotboxin,’" Steve-O said. "Be real! All of these prolific potheads, I’ve been on their shows and it wasn’t so important to them to blow marijuana smoke in my face, but for Bill Maher it was a dealbreaker.”

Steve-O has been vocal about his recovery from drug addiction, revealing in 2023 that he now has to avoid the smell of marijuana.

"When I smell marijuana I find it kind of upsetting. I don't like breathing it into my lungs and what's worse, I love the way it smells," he said, according to the Daily Mail.

He added during the appearance on Australian radio that he had tried to avoid hard drugs but had tried most everything else.

"I never tried heroin and if I tried crack cocaine I'm pretty sure I did it wrong. Other than that, I did everything," Steve-O said.

"Any other disease, the best you can hope for is to get back to where you were before the disease. But for addicts, when we treat ourselves we become a better version than before."
