New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd is in critical condition after being shot in Midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning, according to police and team officials. The shooting unfolded just after 2 am on West 38th Street near Seventh Avenue, an area that’s usually busy even at that hour.

Police at first did not publicly identify the victim, but sources confirmed to The New York Post that the wounded man was the 29-year-old NFL player. The Jets later acknowledged Boyd was involved in the incident, saying only, “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time.”

Law enforcement sources said the shooting started after a dispute outside Sei Less, a popular restaurant in the neighborhood. Boyd was hit in the abdomen when a suspect opened fire twice. The shooter took off in a BMW X8 SUV, and another high-end vehicle, a silver Mercedes-Benz Maybach, also left the scene moments after. Witnesses weren’t cooperative with investigators, which has slowed the investigation.

Photos taken afterward show an armored Rhino GX, a $300,000 specialty SUV, parked outside as police worked the scene. Boyd reportedly drifted in and out of consciousness before being rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, according to the New York Post.

Boyd, who stands 5'11, joined the Jets this season after previous stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, and Houston Texans. He is currently on the team’s injured reserve list. The veteran defensive back has earned more than $8 million in his career and signed a $1.6 million deal with the Jets for this season, per salary data from Spotrac.
