Ontario recorded 161 new COVID-19 infections on Monday, almost breaking a record of the lowest daily reported infections in almost three months.

In the last nine days, the ministry of health has recorded less than 200 new infections on eight of those days.

“With 214 more resolved, there are 53 fewer active cases in the province as the persistent decrease in active cases continues,” tweeted Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a tweet.

This is good news for Ontarians living in Toronto, Windsor-Essex and Peel Region, who are desperately waiting to to move into the next phase of reopening. Ontario premier Doug Ford announcement on Monday as to whether or not those regions can join the rest of the province in Stage 2 of reopening.

Those three areas have been withheld from entering Stage 2 of Ontario's "Framework for Reopening our Province" as the number of new COVID-19 infections remains much higher. Of the 161 new infections recorded Monday, 69 precent were found in Toronto, Peel Region and Windsor-Essex.

On Monday, the other 34 public health units reported less than five new cases of COVID-19 with several reporting zero new cases.

Across the province, there are currently 33,637 confirmed cases and 28,933 cases that are deemed to be resolved. Three people died of COVID-19 in Ontario over the last 24 hours, bringing the province's total death toll to 2,609.
