Democratic Senate candidate Jon Ossoff is starting to lose ground against incumbent David Perdue in a Georgia runoff race due to a scandal involving China.
The latest poll results from Trafalgar show Perdue leading his opponent by three or more percentage points. The survey also showed that the other Georgia incumbent, Senator Kelly Leoffler is also leading her opponent Rafael Warnock by a similar margin.
The main reason for this drop in Ossoff's popularity appears to be due to his alleged ties to the Chinese Communist Party, by way of a Hong Kong Company called PCCW Media Limited, according to Fox News.
"Jon Ossoff tried to hide his connection to a media company with direct ties to the Communist Chinese government. We're asking the Senate Ethics Committee to look into this further, because we believe this was an intentional effort to conceal information from the people of Georgia," said Stewart Bragg, the Georgia GOP Executive director, on Dec. 9.
"PCCW, the largest telecom agency in Hong Kong, is run by Chairman Richard Li, son of Hong Kong’s richest man, Li Ka-shing. Li also serves as a councilor for the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington, D.C., think tank. But for years, Li has spoken out against Hong Kong independence and the pro-democracy protests that have rocked the island as the Chinese Communist Party has consolidated control," stated an article by the National Review published in September.
Perdue had this to say about the issue:
"Jon Ossoff has a China problem. His shoddy explanations about his business ties with the communist Chinese government raise more questions than they answer -- and leave Georgians doubtful that Ossoff can be trusted to hold foreign adversaries accountable. It's time Jon Ossoff start living by that high standard of transparency he talks so much about."
