Over 200 new cases of coronavirus reported in Ontario in one day—largest number in three weeks

Ontario saw a spike yesterday in the number of reported cases of the novel coronavirus, with 203 new cases confirmed, according to Global News.

This spike represents by far the largest single day total of new cases in three weeks, and brings the running total in the province up to 37,942 cases.

So far, 2,753 people in Ontario alone have died from the virus up until now, while 33,605 people have recover from. The mortality rate continues to creep steadily downward as more people are found to be positive for coronavirus, and as more and more patients recover.

All of the new infections are highly localized, with almost all of them coming from only five different regions in the province. Peel Region led the numbers with 57 new infections reported, followed by Ottawa with 43. Toronto had 30 new cases, Windsor-Essex 24, and York Region 10 new cases. It can be noted that often isolated incidents can be sources of mass contagion, leading to hot spots where new cases are concentrated.

The coronavirus is perceived by many to be a disease that disproportionately affects people over 60 years of age, but the latest numbers are showing 57 per cent of the new cases are in people aged 39 or younger. This is in keeping with current trends. Currently in Ontario almost half of the people who have tested positive are between 20 and 60 years of age.

It should be noted, however, that not every case has a confirmed age and/or gender.

These new cases bring the total number of Ontarians hospitalized due to coronavirus up from 115 to 120. 36 of these are in ICU and 23 are currently on ventilators.
