As provinces impose second lockdowns and Trudeau pledges more assistance for those affected, a majority of Canadians are becoming concerned about Canada’s finances, with this year's deficit being around $380 Billion.

A new poll conducted by Maru/Blue, which surveyed 1,515 Canadians, found that 67 percent of respondents were concerned about the growing deficit, and believed that it was time for the Trudeau government to reduce spending.

The poll also found that 51 percent of Canadians believe that the Liberals are just looking after their base, and not all Canadians. For example, Western Canada, who overwhelmingly rejected Trudeau’s Liberals during the last election, has barely gotten any federal support for its struggling oil and gas sector during the pandemic.

While the poll did find that a slim majority of Canadians support the federal government (53.5 percent), this is not the case in western provinces like Alberta. The majority of Canadians (51 percent) also think that the government is not prudent when making spending choices.

This high spending comes to no surprise for many Canadians, as Justin Trudeau famously claimed in a 2014 CPAC interview that budgets balance themselves. While giving a talk years before becoming prime minister, Trudeau also claimed to have always struggled with understanding math.

Conservative Party finance critic Pierre Poilievre pointed out that Trudeau’s COVID-19 sending was so high that it equated to about $10,000 per Canadian or $40,000 per family of four.

The poll did find, however, that 59 percent of Canadians believe that the federal government is making the right decisions for our nation, and 55 percent believe that they have the right priorities. 62 percent of Canadians also said that austerity does harm to the economy.

The poll was conducted nationally between October 2 and 4, and is accurate within +/- 3.5 percentage points using a Bayesian Credibility Interval.
