York Region's medical officer of health ordered the closure of a small business in Newmarket, Ontario after it defied the lockdown by being open for in person shopping.
An order was issued under Section 22 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, after allegations that Point of Light, Body, Mind, Spirit Store and Centre on Yonge Street opened their doors to shoppers. There are also claims that those in the store were maskless, reports CP24.
The owners of the store were previously charged under the Reopening Ontario Act on December 23, but vowed to stay open for business. Dr. Kurji says that he has mentioned this in his order and that follow up inspections saw more in person shopping and the disregard for masks.
The store stayed closed during most of the holiday season, but was once again opened on January 5. The order of the medical health of health states that the store must shut down and only do curbside pickup or delivery.
The order also requires that the store follow all COVID-19 regulations. Individuals who break Section 22 orders can face fines of $5,000 a day, while corporations can face fines of $25,000 a day.
