"If President Biden is willing to admit he is unable to continue to stand as the Democratic Party nominee for President after the primary process due to his health, he is unable to continue to serve as President until January 20, 2025."
Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) demanded that President Joe Biden's cabinet members and Vice President Kamala Harris invoke the 25th Amendment in order to have Biden step down from the presidency on Monday.
Schmitt wrote a letter making the request and released it online: "Yesterday, July 21, 2024, President Biden announced he would no longer seek the Democratic Party's nomination for the Presidency. This decision came after a weeks-long pressure campaign by the Democrat elite to push out President Biden following the first Presidential Debate-where those party elites' dirty secret was unveiled, a truth those of us in Real America had known for years."
"President Biden is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, including, but not limited to, his ability to serve as the Commander in Chief of our armed forces," the Missouri Senator added. "If President Biden is willing to admit he is unable to continue to stand as the Democratic Party nominee for President after the primary process due to his health, he is unable to continue to serve as President until January 20, 2025."
The call from Schmitt is one of many that have occurred since Biden stepped down on Sunday. Immediately following Biden dropping out of the race, he endorsed Harris to be the next president in the 2024 election. So far, there have yet to be any prominent challengers against Harris in securing the nomination.
Reports circulated that Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) was going to re-register as a Democrat in order to run in the race, however, he quickly put those suggestions to rest after the weekend. Most major names that many had speculated as being a potential nominee instead of Biden, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom, also endorsed Harris after she launched her campaign in lieu of Biden being the presumptive nominee.
Biden was not seen publicly for several days after being diagnosed with COVID-19 last week, leading to some speculation about the state of his health.
