Seven people were arrested following riots in the city's Old Port area on Sunday evening.

Crowds gathered in old Montreal in response to the city's return to an 8 pm curfew, switching back from 9:30 pm. It was estimated that more than 2,000 people showed up for the protests, with 5,000 expressing interest online in attending.

Extensive property damage was recorded, with several videos emerging of rioters smashing windows setting street fires.

Police began dispersing the crowd with tear gas shortly after, and the riot had mostly ended by 9:45 pm.

In a tweet this morning, Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante called the protests "unacceptable" and called for unity.

"The mayhem observed in Old Montreal last night is absolutely unacceptable. Fatigue linked to our fight against #COVID19 does not in any way justify the destruction of public property and failure to respect the rules. We must remain united and stick together," she wrote.
