"We are heartbroken to learn that one of our host's vehicles was involved in this awful incident," said Steve Webb, Turo's Vice President of Communications.
Turo, a ride-sharing app that allows vehicle owners to rent their personal cars out, released a statement after authorities determined the vehicle used to kill 15 people and injure more than 30 others in the New Orleans massacre was rented through their company.
"We are heartbroken to learn that one of our host's vehicles was involved in this awful incident," said Steve Webb, Turo's Vice President of Communications, according to the Daily Mail. "We are actively partnering with the FBI. We are not currently aware of anything in this guest's background that would have identified him as a trust and safety threat to us at the time of the reservation."
Records show that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, rented a white Ford EV F-150 from a vehicle owner in Houston, Texas. He has been accused by the FBI of driving the vehicle to Louisiana and plowing down dozens of people during New Year's celebrations on Bourbon and Canal Streets in the French Quarter around 3:15 am. Jabbar had an ISIS flag with him when he committed the attack. The owner of the vehicle has not been publicly identified.
Federal and local authorities believe Jabbar did not act alone. Officials are looking for four to five additional suspects in this case.
Authorities are also investigating a second New Year's Day terrorist attack that occurred outside the entrance to Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas around 8:40 am. Officials said a Tesla Cybertruck "intentionally" exploded. It was later determined that the vehicle was also rented through Turo. Authorities have made no mention if these cases are related but are investigating to see if there are any connections, CNN reported.
