A beloved Tennessee high school teacher was found dead in a classroom Thursday morning. Samuel Colin Day, a special education director at Munford High School, is believed to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. The incident occurred around 6 am, before school was in session.

The school was closed for the day after police discovered Day's body.

A statement issued by the Munford Police Department indicated that there was no foul play or threat to the safety of students and faculty at the school. The agency also offered condolences.

"This incident occurred at approx. 6 am this morning, well before students arrived for class," said MPD. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, students, and faculty affected by this heartbreaking event. We ask that the community respect the family's privacy during this difficult time."

"There are no indications of foul play," the statement continued. "Further information may be obtained from the Tipton County Board of Education. All students in all schools are safe."

Munford is located about 30 miles north of Memphis.

Those who knew Day took to social media to express their sadness over the tragedy, describing him as a "wonderful" person who was loved and respected by many.

"He was so sweet," a former student wrote on Facebook. "I talked to him every morning and we were twins on twin day with another teacher, rip."

Another person added, "Mr. Day is a wonderful man. I could've sworn every time I seen him he was smiling and happy."

Others offered their condolences and highlighted the love and commitment Day had for his students.
