Trudeau's new Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault has broken another Liberal pledge, saying that a plastic ban will be postponed until 2024 at the earliest.

Plastic straws, for instance, will continue to be allowed to be sold, even with the Liberal's attempts to ban them, according to Blacklock's Reporter.

"It is the government’s intent to finalize these regulations," said a Trudeau government official. The plastic ban would have come into effect next week.

Cutlery, stir sticks, six-pack rings, disposable checkout bags, polystyrene food containers, and drinking straws, are subject to a ban, but there is no mechanism to enforce it.

Manufacturers have also been permitted to make these plastic objects as enforcement will not occur for years. Yet, businesses will have to sell plastic in a covert manner.

"A retail store may sell a package of 20 or more single-use plastic flexible straws to a customer if the customer requests straws and the package is not displayed in a manner that permits the customer to view the package before purchasing it," ordered the government.

4.7 million tonnes of plastic is used in Canada each year, according to the Ministry of the Environment. Of this, 86 percent ends up in a landfill.
