The COVID tracking app developed by the federal government in 2020 has fallen into near-complete disuse, despite a surging number of cases, according to City News.

In November, Trudeau's app was used a grand total of 869 times. This is in spite of the app having well over six million total downloads.

The app cost the Canadian taxpayer $20 million. Much of the problem seems to be that people don't upload their Covid tests to the platform, which means the app can't alert other people.

On top of this, Alberta and British Columbia never agreed to use this app as they had developed their own.

The consequence of Trudeau's app failure is that many thousands of people who do come into contact with someone infected with Covid-19 will simply never know.

A Trudeau government spokesperson said they "still recommend the use of COVID Alert even for individuals who have been vaccinated."

"With the uncertainties around variants and as we learn more about vaccines, the app continues to be a useful tool in the fight against COVID-19," they added.

A professor at the University of Toronto, on the other hand, called the app useless: "At this point, because it’s so infectious and the rates are going up so quickly, I’m not sure it’s the best use of contact tracers’ time."
