As talks have picked up to schedule a vice presidential debate between Donald Trump's pick JD Vance and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Trump campaign has issued a statement saying it cannot schedule a debate because "we don't know" who the democratic nominee for vice president will be.

The statement explained that the campaign has difficulty in scheduling a debate between Vance and VP Harris due to the possibility that Joe Biden may not be the Democratic nominee for president. It went on to imply that the Democrat nominee for president would be Harris, not Biden, following the party's convention.

“We don’t know who the Democrat nominee for Vice President is going to be, so we can’t lock in a date before their convention. To do so would be unfair to Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Gretchen Whitmer, or whoever Kamala Harris picks as her running mate,” said Brian Hughes, Trump Campaign Senior Advisor.

Early Wednesday, VP Harris accepted an invitation from CBS News to participate in a debate with Vance in August. Vance also said in an interview on Tuesday that it would be important for the public to see him debate with Harris.

The comments by the Trump campaign follow widespread speculation that Biden may not be the nominee for president by the Democratic National Convention. The president has previously stated that he will not withdraw from the race, but admitted in an interview on Wednesday that he would consider dropping out should he be diagnosed with a "medical condition" by his doctors.
