The meeting with Noem also included a number of aides to Trump, including Susie Wiles.
Noem had pushed to meet with President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the shooting as she is also slated to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee for regular oversight. Border Patrol head Greg Bovino, like Noem, has been criticized for making claims that Pretti had "wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement."
Trump did not suggest during the meeting that Noem's job would be on the chopping block, according to the New York Times. Noem had said that Pretti was a "domestic terrorist" in the aftermath of the shooting.
The meeting with Noem also included a number of aides to Trump, including Susie Wiles. This all comes as House Democrats have been calling for Noem's impeachment since the shooting of Pretti. House Democrats are set to open up an investigation into Noem, but unlike other investigations, they plan to do so without the help of Republicans. “We understand Democrats are in a minority, but that doesn’t mean that we have to sit on our thumbs and do nothing,” Rep. Bennie Thomas (D-MS) said, per the Washington Post.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries ended a caucus call on Sunday by telling his party he would have more to say when the House returns to Washington next week on moving forward with holding Noem accountable.
Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said that the Democrats are “more focused on showmanship and fundraising clicks than actually removing criminals from our streets. We hope these members get serious about doing their job to protect American people, which is what this Department is doing under Secretary Noem."After the shooting, Trump has since put Border Czar Tom Homan in charge of immigration in Minnesota, bringing Noem as well as Bovino's roles into question.
Pretti was shot on Saturday morning when he was resisting federal law enforcement in Minnesota. Videos from multiple angles have since been released appearing to show a Border Patrol agent grab his firearm from his waistband before shots rang out, and he was killed.
Video also showed officers yell, "He's got a gun," before the shots were fired. Pretti died at the scene.
