On Tuesday, Fox News' Sean Hannity asked former President Donald Trump to address claims that he would abuse power to seek retribution on political opponents if re-elected to the White House.

Trump, who is the current GOP frontrunner, asserted that he will not be a dictator "except for day one" in order to sign what he believes are important policies into law.

The comments were made during a Fox News interview in Davenport, Iowa with host Sean Hannity and received massive praise among Republican voters.

Hannity: "I want to go back to this one issue, though, because the media has been focused on this and attacking you under no circumstances. You are promising America tonight you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody."

Trump: "Except for day one."

Hannity: "Except for day one, meaning?"

Trump: "I want to close the border and I want to drill, drill, drill."

Hannity: "That's not retribution."

Trump: "He says, 'You're not gonna be a dictator, are you?' I said, 'No, no, no. Other than day one. We're closing the border and we're drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I'm not a dictator.'"

The question was asked due to repeated claims by mainstream media and Democratic officials that the 45th president would seek retribution against his political opponents if he were to reclaim the White House in 2025. This is in reference to Donald Trump being indicted by Biden's weaponized Justice Department.

Trump has made his many indictments a primary focus on the campaign trail, calling out President Biden, the Department of Justice, prosecutors, and the federal bureaucracy. He has also strongly called out the justice system for targeting his supporters.

At a campaign event in National Harbor, Maryland, in March, the former president told his supporters "I am your retribution."

"In 2016, I declared, 'I am your voice,'" Trump told the crowd, according to the New York Times. "Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution."
