The last US flight out of Afghanistan left Kabul early Monday morning local time, but 29 Sacramento students are still stuck there, according to the school district.
The August 31 deadline for U.S. troops to withdraw from Afghanistan passed, and though the US airlifted more than 120,000 people out, President Biden said that about 100 to 200 Americans still remain there. This includes the 29 Sacramento school students, according to NPR.
The San Juan Unified School District confirmed that they have 29 students who remain in Afghanistan. They initially reported that 32 of their students were still there, but three have since been evacuated. The remaining students come from 19 families and it is not clear if they are US citizens.
The office of Congressman Ami Bera, (D-CA), confirmed that students in his district are trapped in Afganistan and that the Biden administration has given no update about their situation as yet. His office remains in contact with the Juan Unified School District as they wait for updates.
"Our office has been in close contact with the San Juan Unified School District," Bera spokesperson told Fox News, "and have urgently flagged this with the Department of Defense and State Department."
The Sacramento area is home to one of the largest populations of Afghan immigrants in the US.
