At least one Afghan soldier was killed during gunfire that broke out between Afghan forces and an unidentified gunman. The gunfire occurred near the north gate of the Kabul airport.

Three other Afghan soldiers are also being treated for gunfire wounds at a field hospital near the airport according to The Hill. US and German soldiers were also involved in the gunfire.

Both US and international forces continue to evacuate thousands of US citizens, US military allies, and Afghans from the Kabul airport as Taliban fighters to try to prevent people from leaving the country.

This comes after seven people, including a toddler, were killed in a crowd of people stampeding at the Kabul airport on Sunday. NATO officials say that over 20 people have been killed in the last seven days trying to escape through the airport, either by being shot or crushed in crowds, according to Reuters.

President Joe Biden said in a press briefing on Sunday that the August 31 deadline to have all American troops evacuated out of Afghanistan may have to be extended. Over 28,000 people have been flown out since August 14th and the  evacuation efforts continue.

The US government has now pressed the Civil Reserves Air Fleet into service, which has not used since the Iraq war in 2003.

Six commercial airlines, including Delta Air, American Airlines, and United Airlines are part of this fleet, and 18 of their civilian planes are now being used to transport people who have been evacuated from Kabul to evacuation points in Europe and the Middle East.
