"Apparently, I'm a loser."
Hess, who flashed an "L" on his forehead at his qualifying run after Trump called him a "real loser,” said he had "mixed emotions" about representing the US at the Olympics before competition.
"Apparently, I'm a loser," Hess explained to reporters after he finished his halfpipe qualifying run. He said on Friday, "I worked so hard to be here. I sacrificed my entire life to make this happen. I’m not going to let controversy like that get in my way. I love the United States of America. I cannot say that enough. My original statement, I felt like I said that, but apparently people didn’t take it that way. I’m so happy to be here, so happy to represent Team USA."
However, after the long days of skiing in the finals, Hess came in 10th place. On his second run in the finals, Hess crashed and lost one of his skis while landing one of his freestyle tricks. The gold went to Alex Ferreira of the USA, silver was awarded to Henry Sildaru of Estonia, and the bronze medal was given to Brendan Mackay of Canada.
While at a press conference before the start of the games, where he and others were asked about how they felt about representing the USA, Hess said, "It brings up mixed emotions to represent the US right now, I think. It’s a little hard. There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of, and I think a lot of people aren’t."
"I think, for me, it’s more I’m representing my friends and family back home, the people that represented it before me, all the things that I believe are good about the U.S. If it aligns with my moral values, I feel like I’m representing it. Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn't mean I represent everything that’s going on in the US," he added.
That statement and others from members of Team USA received a heavy amount of backlash online, with some saying that they were going to boycott the Olympics because of the comments.
