Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called for Mayor Eric Adams to be removed from office, suggesting that New York Governor Kathy Hochul should take action to remove him, following news that the Department of Justice is dismissing its case against the mayor.

On Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez posted on Bluesky, the left-wing alternative for X, “Adams must be removed. The city cannot sustain being governed for nearly a year by a Mayor who is being coerced by Trump admin in order to escape charges. This corruption poses a real threat to the people of the city. He should have resigned a while ago, but will not. So it’s time for him to go.”

Ocasio-Cortez also reposted an opinion piece on X from the New York Daily News that called for Adams’ removal by Governor Kathy Hochul, which argued that he is engaging in a "quid pro quo" arrangement with the Trump administration. The article claimed that Adams is working with federal immigration authorities to facilitate the apprehension and deportation of illegal immigrants in exchange for the Department of Justice dropping its investigation into his campaign finances. It also referred to Adams as a “hostage” of Trump’s Border Czar Tom Homan.

The article urged Hochul to take action, stating, “To Gov. Hochul, on behalf of our beloved New York City, please end this hostage negotiation now. For the sake of our city’s integrity and the safety of its residents, you must remove Adams from office.”

“In this critical moment, we look to you, governor, to uphold the values that make New York a beacon of hope and resilience, and remove Adams as mayor of New York City,” the article concluded.

Hochul has not ruled out removing Adams from office.

Ocasio-Cortez has publicly clashed with Homan in recent days. On Friday, Homan criticized the congresswoman for a webinar she hosted advising migrants about how to handle encounters with ICE. The border czar questioned if her actions were impeding law enforcement efforts and whether or not that would be a crime.

"Let’s pray that she is not ‘educating’ the next murderer of a young college nursing student on how to evade arrest by ICE," Homan told Fox News. "How many more young women have to be raped, murdered, and burned alive until she wakes up?"

In a statement to Fox News, Ocasio-Cortez responded, “I am glad Mr. Homan is checking with the Department of Justice to familiarize himself with the limits of his agency’s authority in entering the homes of everyday Americans without a warrant. And I am proud to offer civil education to everyday Americans to ensure ICE’s compliance with the law, given the numerous reports of agents providing incorrect paperwork in their attempts to enter and search private homes."

"Since Mr. Homan seems to be vaguely familiar with U.S. immigration law, we also remind him that according to Congressional statute, becoming undocumented in the United States is a civil offense and not a criminal one. I look forward to continuing our work in ensuring the safety of everyday New Yorkers while keeping families together," the congresswoman added.
