"I certainly understand that some have chosen to attack the integrity of the Justice Department as components and its employees by claiming that we do not treat like cases alike."
During a presser for the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday, Merrick Garland was asked a question about the department's integrity. He responded saying that the questions some have posed about the DOJ's integrity constitute "an attack on an institution that is essential to American democracy."
A journalist, referring to the point that Republicans have talked about "holding the FBI director in contempt," asked if Americans should be "concerned about the integrity of the components of [the] Justice Department and what do you have to say about how they're reacting?"
"I certainly understand that some have chosen to attack the integrity of the Justice Department as components and its employees by claiming that we do not treat like cases alike," said Garland. "This constitutes an attack on an institution that is essential to American democracy and essential to the safety of the American people."
Garland added that the DOJ makes its "cases based on the facts and the law. These are not just words. These are what we live by. They're the foundation of the way we make these decisions."
The address from Garland was prompted by the allegations that Hunter Biden, with the criminal charges that he has racked up, is not being treated with the amount of justice any normal citizen would receive.
IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley back in May alleged that the DOJ was treating Hunter with "preferential treatment" because there were "unchecked conflicts of interest" in the case. He said this was "an important and high-profile investigation of the President's son."
In addition, Shapley said there was a "request to remove the entire team from the Hunter Biden investigation, a team that had been investigating it for over 5 years."
Shapley, in the transcript of the Congressional Committee interview he participated in, said, "The mission of IRS CI is to investigate potential criminal violations of Internal Revenue Code and related financial crimes in a manner that fosters confidence in the Code and compliance with the law."
"That mission can only be met by treating every taxpayer we encounter the same," Shapley added.
