California State University professor Jonathan Caravello has been indicted by a federal grand jury for throwing a tear gas canister at federal agents during an immigration enforcement operation at a marijuana farm earlier this year. The violence broke out at Glass House Farms in Camarillo, California, one of the largest weed farms in the state.
US Attorney for the Central District of California, Bill Essayli, made the announcement on Wednesday in an X post, saying, Caravello, 37, of Ventura "faces up to 20 years in prison" if convicted on charges. The action was caught on camera and shared on social media.
Caravello was found by a federal grand jury to have violated code 18 USC 111, which is assault on a federal law enforcement officer using a deadly or dangerous weapon. Agents had fired projectiles into the crowd, including gas canisters, after warning the crowd to disperse.
The incident occurred on July 10 when Caravello, who teaches at CSU Channel Islands, attempted to disrupt an immigration raid at a the Camarillo marijuana grow facility.
Caravello was arrested following the incident, but has been freed on a $15,000 bond. He is expected to be arraigned in US District Court in Los Angeles in the coming weeks, according to a DOJ press release. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is investigating this case.
Democrat officials condemned the immigration enforcement action at the farm, with some alleging that ICE was getting in the way of necessary growing operations. Unaccompanied minor children were found working at the facility and 361 illegal immigrants were detained.
