Donald Trump has not been on X since he was kicked off the platform then known as Twitter in the early days of 2021, but he's set to make a return on Monday night by hosting an interview conducted by Elon Musk on Monday night. That interview will air on the @RealDonaldTrump account, though it's unclear if Trump will come back to the platform in any further capacity.

"President Trump is asking you to like this post," a message from Team Trump read. "President Trump will be interviewed by Elon Musk on Monday at 8 pm Eastern. Like this post to be notified when the interview begins. IT WILL BE THE INTERVIEW OF THE CENTURY! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

The interview between Musk and Trump was announced last week. "ON MONDAY NIGHT I’LL BE DOING A MAJOR INTERVIEW WITH ELON MUSK — Details to follow!" Trump posted on Truth Social.

Trump's presidency was liberally peppered with tweets from the White House where he commented on anything and everything that came to mind. One tweet from Trump could send the media ecosystem into a tizzy as pundits and journalists speculated on what his off-the-cuff words meant for the country. In the wake of the J6 riot at the Capitol Building, then-CEO Jack Dorsey permanently suspended Trump's account, assuming that Trump had been involved in inciting violence via his tweets. He was suspended from Facebook for similar reasons.

In fact, Trump had urged calm and peaceful protest, but that tweet, along with others, was buried as the narrative spun that Trump was responsible for the actions of his supporters, many of whom left the rally he held at the DC Ellipse on that day for the Capitol. A permitted protest was also being held near the Capitol that day, but this fact, too, was overshadowed by the other events of the day.

"After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence," Twitter said in a statement at the time.

"In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action," they continued. "Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.

"However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules entirely and cannot use Twitter to incite violence, among other things. We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement," Twitter concluded.

Trump did not come back to Twitter even after Elon Musk bought the platform to ensure that it remained a bastion of free speech, renaming it X. Many have hoped that Trump would return to the platform, though Trump has created his own social media platform, Truth Social, where he posts his thoughts.

He did share one post, in August 2023, after he was booked in Fulton County, Georgia, on RICO charges in one of the many suits brought against Trump by Democrat DAs. At that time, Trump posted his mugshot, which went instantly viral.

Musk has supported Trump, going as far as to endorse him after the assassination attempt against the former president on July 13. "I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery," Musk said.
