Police said the white van tried to run over ICE agents during a federal enforcement operation. Agents fired at the vehicle, which then drove into a wooded area behind nearby homes. One person inside was hit by gunfire, and a second person outside suffered minor injuries.
Both were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
Anne Arundel County Police Chief Amal Awad said the investigation is “multi-layered,” with the county’s Criminal Investigations Division, the FBI, and ICE all involved. Lt. Josh Bramble said he didn’t know the victims’ ages or genders and referred questions to police. No federal agents were reported hurt.
Authorities cordoned off part of the neighborhood and deployed a forensic van. At least one person on scene wore an ICE uniform, The Banner reports.
This is one of at least nine immigration enforcement-related shootings nationwide this year. At least five involved ICE, Customs and Border Protection, or Homeland Security agents firing at vehicles that tried to evade or hit them.
